This Time We'll Be Together

It was a rainy and stormy night. I froze and hesitated. “Should I continue my journey or should I stop and stay overnight?” This journey made me weary and I felt I needed to rest for one night. But when I recalled about my parents, I knew I had to continue.

This all started when I got a particular letter from my mother about the disturbance that has been happening in our village. Sheeps are dying with their blood dried out and people have gone missing. I know this sounds scary, but the truth is this occurrence had happened in our village a few years ago. Back then I did not know what had caused these inhuman things. But now I know. Why have I just known this now? Because I have joined the hunters, hunters are a group of people who specialized in dealing with these things and these things are vampires. Yes, vampires exist and they have been among us since thousands of years ago.

Up until now, I’ve never returned to my village since I went to the big city five years ago. Letters have come from my family asking me to come home but I ignored them until now. I kinda feel guilty about that, but what’s done is done. Right now what I want is just to arrive just in time before anything bad happens to my family. I am a vampire hunter and stories about vampires are not pretty. They kill people and occasionally they even turn some humans into dhampirs. Dhampir is a mindless creature that is driven crazy for blood. This is the worst possible option that could happen in the unfolding future. I prayed that I wasn’t too late.

I picked up my pace  even though I am tired from this five days journey. The village is just half a day away. A few hours later, I arrived at my village. So far I have seen, everything looks normal. Wait, no.  There's something wrong here, it feels too quiet and the atmosphere is heavy. There’s not a single soul to be seen. I hastily walk through the village to the road which leads to my home. I reached my home in no time. I knocked on the door calling out to my parents.

“Mom, Dad… I’m home!”

There’s no answer. I cracked the door slightly ajar and peeked in. I prayed underneath my breath that there’s nothing wrong, please don’t let anything happen to them. But it seems like I was too late. The sight greeting me is horrifying, bodies are strewn on the floor, their blood is leaking through the floor. The smell of coppery blood is so pungent and Mother is hovering above those corpses, her mouth is stained by blood. Father is lying unmoving in a pool of his own blood.

I was too late, it’s all my fault. This all happened because of me, because I didn’t come home even once. I’m sorry Mom, I’m sorry Dad. I’m sorry I’m such an ungrateful child. I should have been here with you.  Let’s go together to the other side. At least this time we’ll be together.
